What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is surgically anchored to your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. The benefit of using implants is that they don't rely on neighbouring teeth for support. This allows for a more permanent and fixed solution to missing teeth. Once the titanium root is placed into your bone, your dentist will allow for the tissue and bone to fuse and heal around the implant.
Once ready to restore, a custom-made core and tooth can be attached to that titanium base.
How long does the implant process take?
The entire process usually takes about two to nine months, depending on your treatment plan. Everyone heals differently. The fitting and adjustment of replacement teeth typically takes no more than two months. The success of your implant depends on how quickly you heal as well. Once the implant has healed by fusing to the bone, your dentist can create a replacement restoration that is attached to your implant that acts and looks like your natural tooth.

When might I need a dental implant?

Am I a candidate for dental implants?
Implants rely on adequate bone structure to help for the titanium root to fuse. Your dentist will complete a medical history, exam, and take x-rays to check your bone structure, and the overall health of your teeth and gums to see if you are a good candidate for dental implants. If you grind your teeth, or suffer from diabetes, success rates may also decrease.
If you do not have adequate bone structure to support an implant, bone grafting may be recommended before your implant procedure can take place.
